Do you think you are responsible for:

  • How others feel?
  • Others being angry or upset with you?

If you answered yes, I want you to reconsider.

You cannot cause another person’s:

  • Thoughts
  • Feelings
  • Actions

And … they can’t cause yours.

People often say things like:

  • He hurt my feelings
  • They made me so mad
  • If I hadn’t ________, They wouldn’t have _____________

All of those are misconceptions.

Here is the truth:

Everyone is responsible for their own:

  • Thoughts
  • Feelings
  • Actions

People feel what they feel because of a thought they are thinking.

We want to believe it is others’ words and actions that cause our feelings.

But it isn’t.

It is your own thoughts about what they said or did that caused your feelings.

So, the next time someone says:

  • You hurt my feelings
  • You make me so mad
  • If you hadn’t _____________, I wouldn’t have _________________

Then I want you to think:

Return To Sender

Address Unknown

In other words, don’t take responsibility for someone else’s thoughts, feelings or actions.

Instead, remember a responsible adult owns their thoughts feelings and actions.

They take responsibility for their own feelings and behaviors.

You didn’t hurt their feelings or make them do anything.

They chose that thought, feeling, and behavior.
