A legacy doesn’t have to be money or property.
It can be values, lessons, skills, etc.
Example: She left a legacy of love and respect to her children.
In fact, how you live your life is creating a legacy (good or bad).
Have you thought about the legacy you are creating right now?
You may be thinking: “I’m not creating a legacy.”
But you are.
By your choices and actions, you are creating a legacy.
Think about it.
At a funeral people talk about:
- The life that person lived.
- Their qualities.
- What organizations they were involved with.
- How they gave back or helped others.
- What kind of parent or grandparent they were.
- What that person taught others by how they lived.
Sometimes later you will even hear about things that were unspoken at the funeral.
You might hear about a person’s less desirable legacies.
In fact, if you are a survivor of abuse you:
- Probably think about the legacy your abuser left you.
- The things they taught you (not necessarily positive).
Even if you weren’t abused you think about how you were raised.
How your parents raised you (good or bad) is part of their legacy.
So again, I ask you what legacy are you creating?
How do you want you to be remembered?
What do you want your children and grandchildren to learn from you?
Are you living your life in a way that creates the legacy you want?
Why or why not?
What changes would you make in order to create a legacy that you want to leave?
Don’t believe you can’t make those changes?
You, not your past is in charge of how you live your life.
So, take the above questions seriously.
Take time to:
- Examine your life.
- Consider the legacy you want to leave.
- Make the changes to create that legacy.
To quote Clarence The Angel from the Movie “It’s A Wonderful Life”:
“Strange, isn’t it?”
“Each man’s life touches so many other lives.”
“When he isn’t around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?”
Maybe it’s time to mindfully consider living your legacy life.
