I want to issue a challenge to you
For one week I challenge you to replace:
I can’t with I don’t want to.
I can’t is disempowering.
I don’t want to is choosing powerfully.
Think about that.
I remember when I was a kid.
I had dinner at a friend’s house.
During dinner, I asked: “Can I …”
The father replied: “I don’t know. Can you?”
He was reminding me to ask: “May I …”
Instead of “Can I …”
May asks permission
Can is about the ability to do something.
It is similar when you say: “I can’t …”
You are saying you don’t have the ability to.
And often you are giving away your power in the same sentence.
- I can’t talk right now.
- I can’t go with you.
- I can’t buy that.
Most of the time the truth is:
- You can.
- But you are choosing not to.
I am challenging you to empower yourself.
For one week notice how often you say: “I can’t”.
Then correct yourself by saying: “I don’t want to”.
Notice how much power you were giving away.
Notice how much power you are taking back.
Just by changing your language.
Remember, you are in charge of every decision in your life.
Use this challenge to choose powerfully:
- What you want to do.
- What you don’t want to do.
